How to Care for an Automatic Watch

von Velant Watch Editorial Team 01 Sep 2026 0 Kommentare

An automatic watch does not need constant attention, but a few sensible habits help it run reliably and keep its finish looking good. The goal is not to create a ritual around every movement. It is simply to avoid the conditions that mechanical watches handle poorly.

Start it gently

If the watch has stopped, follow the model’s instructions for manual winding. For many automatic watches, a series of gentle clockwise turns of the crown is enough to begin building power before you put it on. Never force the crown when you feel resistance.

Wrist movement will continue winding the watch as you wear it. Shaking it aggressively is unnecessary and can subject the movement to avoidable shock.

Set the time with care

Pull and turn the crown gently. On watches with a date or day display, avoid using the quick-set date function during the hours when the movement may already be changing the calendar. The exact restricted period varies, so check the instructions for your model. A cautious approach is to move the hands away from late evening before adjusting the date.

Keep it away from strong magnets

Magnetism can affect the rate of a mechanical movement. Avoid leaving the watch directly on powerful speakers, magnetic clasps, induction equipment or other strong magnetic sources. Everyday electronics do not always cause a problem, but direct, prolonged contact is easy to avoid.

Protect it from impact

Normal daily movement is expected. Repeated hard impacts are not. Remove the watch for activities such as hammering, high-impact sports or using vibrating machinery. A visible case can survive a knock while the movement inside is affected.

Clean the exterior correctly

Use a clean microfiber cloth for routine wiping. For a water-resistant watch with a suitable metal or silicone strap, a lightly damp cloth can remove residue. Do not soak the watch unless its rating and condition support that use. Keep leather straps dry and allow perspiration to evaporate naturally.

Storage and watch winders

Store the watch in a dry place away from direct sunlight. A soft pouch or lined box protects it from scratches. A watch winder is optional, not a requirement for most owners. If you rotate watches, it is usually fine to let an automatic watch stop and reset it when you wear it again.

When to seek service

Ask a qualified technician to inspect the watch if it suddenly gains or loses much more time than usual, stops despite normal wear, develops condensation under the crystal or has a damaged crown. Service intervals depend on the movement, use and manufacturer guidance rather than one universal timetable.
