Watch Water Resistance Explained: 3 ATM, 5 ATM and 10 ATM

Water resistance is one of the most misunderstood watch specifications. A rating expressed in meters or atmospheres describes a laboratory pressure test; it is not a promise that every real-world activity at that depth is safe.

What ATM means

ATM is short for atmosphere, a unit used to express pressure. Watchmakers commonly list ratings such as 3 ATM, 5 ATM or 10 ATM. During testing, a watch is exposed to controlled static pressure. Swimming, diving, hot water and fast arm movement create conditions that are different from a stationary test.

A practical guide to common ratings

3 ATM / 30 meters

Usually intended for accidental splashes and everyday contact such as light rain. It should not be treated as a swimming rating unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise.

5 ATM / 50 meters

Offers more protection for everyday use. Some watches at this rating are suitable for brief surface swimming, but the product-specific instructions should decide. Avoid pressing pushers or operating the crown in water.

10 ATM / 100 meters

Generally more appropriate for swimming and water activities at the surface when the seals are in good condition. It is not automatically a professional diving watch. Purpose-built dive watches have additional construction and testing requirements.

Why hot water is a problem

Showers, hot tubs and saunas expose a watch to heat, detergents and changing pressure. Heat can affect seals, while soap reduces surface tension and can help water move into small gaps. Even a watch with a useful water-resistance rating is better kept out of hot, soapy environments.

Seals age

Water resistance is not permanent. Gaskets can compress or dry with time, and a hard impact can affect the crown, crystal or case back. Opening the case for a battery change or repair can also disturb the seal.

If you depend on a watch around water, have its resistance checked periodically by a qualified watch technician, especially after service.

Before your watch gets wet

• Confirm the exact rating on the product page or case back.
• Make sure the crown is fully pushed in or screwed down.
• Do not operate the crown or pushers while wet.
• Keep leather straps away from repeated water exposure.
• Rinse an appropriate water-resistant watch with fresh water after saltwater exposure and dry it gently.
