Why Mechanical Watches Still Matter

por Velant Watch Editorial Team 28 May 2026 0 comentarios

A phone can tell time more accurately than a mechanical watch. That has not made mechanical watches irrelevant. It has clarified what people value about them: visible engineering, tactile operation and an object designed to work through springs and gears rather than software.

A machine small enough to wear

Inside a mechanical watch, the mainspring stores energy. A gear train transfers that energy, the escapement releases it in controlled steps and the balance assembly regulates the rate. The parts work continuously while the watch is running.

An automatic watch adds a rotor that turns with wrist movement and winds the mainspring. A hand-wound watch relies on the crown. Both are mechanical; “automatic” describes the winding system, not a completely different category.

The appeal is partly visible

Open-heart dials and exhibition case backs make the movement part of the design. Even when the mechanism is hidden, the smooth sequence of small seconds-hand steps gives a mechanical watch a distinct character.

This does not make it objectively better than quartz. It makes the watch interesting for a different reason. Quartz prioritizes accuracy and convenience; mechanical watchmaking makes the method of keeping time part of the experience.

A more involved ownership experience

A mechanical watch may need to be wound and reset after it has not been worn. Its daily rate can vary, and it should be protected from strong magnetism and hard impact. Some owners enjoy that interaction; others would rather have a watch that asks for almost nothing.

Before choosing, read our automatic versus quartz comparison. Neither choice is a test of taste or seriousness.

Longevity depends on construction and care

A serviceable mechanical movement can run for many years when it is properly maintained, but longevity is not automatic. Water intrusion, impact, magnetism, worn lubricants and poor-quality repairs can all shorten its life.

Likewise, buying a mechanical watch should not be treated as a guarantee of financial appreciation. Most watches are personal goods, not investments. Their value is better measured by how often they are worn and enjoyed.

Why the category continues

  • Engineering: the mechanism is understandable and visible.
  • Tactile feel: winding and setting create a physical connection.
  • Design: skeleton and open-heart layouts are only possible because there is something mechanical to reveal.
  • Continuity: the basic principles connect modern watches with centuries of watchmaking.
  • Personal expression: choosing mechanical can be an aesthetic preference rather than a practical necessity.

Choosing a first mechanical watch

Look beyond the dial. Check case dimensions, water resistance, strap, power reserve information and the seller’s return policy. Decide whether you want a visible movement or a more restrained design. If you will wear the watch only occasionally, be comfortable resetting it.

Once you own one, gentle winding, sensible storage and avoiding hard shocks will do more than complicated rituals. Our automatic watch care guide covers the essentials.
